Back at the bed and breakfast, Aaron was furious when he saw the breakfast tray Randy had prepared, allegedly for the two of them. Dave told Aaron that Randy had tried to persuade him to share it with him.

"I came to find you instead," Dave said.

It irked Aaron that Randy had made such a fantastic breakfast for Dave, but slapped stuff together for their guests. Randy took so long with even basic menu items, Aaron tried hard not to urge him to move faster.

No. That short-order cook couldn't get here quick enough.

He was pleased when Franklin Reynolds called him, as Aaron and Dave worked to clean the two rental cottages and the house rooms in preparation for their guests. The truth was, Aaron usually enjoyed getting ready for new guests. He loved people and taking care of them, but not all of their guests were wonderful. That was the beauty of having a high-end, boutique property. If you really didn't warm to somebody, they would be gone in a matter of days and other, interesting people soon turned up.

Franklin seemed excited about the prospect of spending time in Kauai. Aaron assured him they would give him a staff room. They had two very small cottages reserved for this very purpose. Each had a bed, bathroom, and tiny kitchenette, but staff had kitchen privileges in the house.

"I'm flying in on the six-thirty go! Airlines flight," Franklin said. "I look forward to discussing the breakfast menu with you and anything else you need me to help you with."

"I do, too," Aaron said. "I'll pick you up—"

"No, no. I'm renting a car. I like to surf on the Na'Pali coast, so I need a car. I'm shipping my own to me but it won't arrive until the weekend."

"Very good." He sounded solid and self-sufficient.

As he ended the call, Dave came running to him. "Code cracker!"

"What?" Aaron asked.

"Our Genesis. She was a CIA code cracker! She apparently was captured in some Middle-East country six years ago and was tortured. Held prisoner for seventy-nine days. She never gave up a thing and broke out of there, rescuing three of her staff in the process. Apparently whatever drugs they gave her fried her brain."

"Oh, my God!"

"I know, right?" Dave ran a hand through his hair. "The government isn't going to let this thing die down. They consider her a precious gem. They say they don't understand why she would disappear. They think she's been murdered. They're about to launch a search for her."

"Where did you hear all this?" Aaron asked, as the whir of choppers pierced the silence.

"On the news! It's on TV and all over the Internet. And, I just got a call. There is some field sergeant coming over to ask us questions."

Aaron stared at Dave. He wanted the authorities to find Genesis, but what if they began nosing around their bed and breakfast thinking they'd had something to do with it?

And what about their new arrivals? How would they feel
